Day trip

Liège from Maastricht by train

Cross the border for a different river city: a striking station, old streets and the citadel slopes.

Make the border crossing simple

The direct cross-border train links Maastricht with Liège-Guillemins. The journey is usually about 35 minutes; check the live service and ticket rules for your date. A domestic Dutch ticket is not automatically the right ticket for a Belgian destination.

Liège-Guillemins is itself a reason to pause. Santiago Calatrava’s station is large, open and architecturally unlike Maastricht’s historic centre. Give it a few minutes before travelling or walking onward into the city.

Choose an old-centre focus

For a compact visit, make the old centre your main destination. Grand Curtius holds collections of archaeology, decorative arts and local history in a group of historic buildings. Check which collections are open: museums can close individual galleries even when the building is operating.

If you would rather stay outdoors, use Place du Marché and the streets around Hors-Château as a starting point. Do not try to see all of Liège by walking straight from the station and back without checking distances or local transport.

Take the steps only if you want them

Montagne de Bueren climbs 374 steps towards the citadel slopes. It is a memorable option, not an obligatory test. The Coteaux de la Citadelle have marked paths and views over the city, with some areas observing opening hours.

Choose this part of the day in dry weather and with suitable shoes. If stairs are not appealing, spend the time at Grand Curtius or along the river. Liège has enough depth that skipping one landmark does not diminish the excursion.

Return with the right ticket

Check the return departure from Liège-Guillemins before settling into dinner. Cross-border ticket conditions vary by age, discount and operator; use the rail provider’s current guidance rather than an old price quoted in a travel article.

This is a full day trip, not a casual extra after a Maastricht museum. It makes most sense when you have a longer stay or want to compare two very different cities on the Meuse.
