Wednesday or Friday at Markt
The regular goods and fabrics market occupies Markt on Wednesday and Friday. Friday is the larger affair; Wednesday is easier to fit around a quieter morning in the centre. Start at the town hall, circle the stalls once, then go back for anything you actually want to buy.
The mix changes with traders and season. Expect food and flowers alongside ordinary household goods, rather than a market devoted solely to local produce. Bring a bag if you mean to shop; if you are only browsing, a lap of the square is enough before the old streets pull you elsewhere.
Thursday in Wyck
The organic market is at Ruiterij in Wyck on Thursday afternoon. It works better as a food stop than as a reason to cross town for a full day. Walk from the station through Rechtstraat, visit the stalls, then continue towards Sint Servaasbrug and the centre.
Check the day’s hours before setting out, especially around public holidays. The appeal is the scale: you can look at bread, cheese or produce without turning the afternoon into a shopping expedition.
Second-hand browsing on Boschstraat
The flea and brocante stalls around Boschstraat are a different proposition from the food market. Go for books, objects and the pleasure of looking, not with a list of groceries. They are usually a weekend feature, subject to events and weather.
Boschstraat also makes a useful link between Markt and the Sphinxkwartier. If the stalls are thin or absent, continue north to the Sphinxpassage and Bassin instead of waiting around. Check the market calendar before making a special journey.
After the stalls
From Markt, the old centre and Dominicanen are minutes away. A more leisurely route goes south to Onze-Lieve-Vrouweplein, then into the Jekerkwartier for Bisschopsmolen. That route makes sense even if you buy nothing.
Keep market food for a bench or a later snack rather than trying to build a complicated lunch from several crowded stalls. If you want to sit down, choose a café after you have left the square. The most useful market morning leaves time to see the city around it.
