Wyck for the first coffee. The Jekerkwartier for the old streets. Sphinx for a film and dinner by the Bassin. Here is how the pieces fit together.

A visit to Bonnefanten
Choose this for a substantial art visit on the east bank. The museum combines collections and temporary exhibitions; check what is open on your date rather than choosing purely from a photograph of the building.

Helpoort and the city walls
The gate and the surviving defences make a good outdoor stop south of the centre. Approach through the Jekerkwartier, pass under Helpoort and continue through the park. Look back at the gate from both sides rather than taking the first photograph and leaving.

Inside Dominicanen
Go for the former church interior and stay to browse. The shelves sit beneath the vaults, and the café occupies the choir. It is centrally placed between Markt and Vrijthof, so it fits almost any first-day route without a detour.
